The song is fully mastered, the artwork is done, the distribution is submitted – and then comes the question that's often underestimated: When exactly should the release go live?
The short answer: Friday, midnight. The interesting answer is why that's the case – and where it's worth deviating from it. That's exactly what this article is about.
Friday is no coincidence, it's the industry standard
Since 2015, almost all major streaming platforms have followed the so-called Global Release Day, an initiative by the IFPI. Since then, the worldwide release week has run from Friday to Thursday – and it's on that very Friday that the most important algorithmic and editorial playlists as well as the chart weeks update, too.
If you release on a different day, you miss out on this automatic push completely. The catch: because everyone drops on Fridays, competition for attention is at its highest on that day. If you want to deliberately play with less competition, you can think about Tuesday or Wednesday – but then the playlist bonus is gone. For most of our releases at OneCrew, Friday is still the right choice.
Why 00:00 exactly?
This is where it gets interesting: streaming algorithms evaluate a new track most aggressively in the first 24 hours. In this window, the following is measured above all:
- Save Rate – how many listeners save the song?
- Skip Rate – how many drop off early?
- Completion Rate – how many listen to the end?
A track with a strong early save rate has a significantly better chance of being added to algorithmic recommendation playlists.
That's exactly why every hour counts: a release at midnight gets an entire weekend of engagement data before the next big round of recommendations is calculated on Monday. A release on Friday afternoon, on the other hand, wastes valuable hours of this "runway" – the data that can be collected by Monday is simply less.
Midnight doesn't automatically mean "most fans are awake"
An important point that many overlook: midnight is the best time for the algorithm – not necessarily for your fans. Actual listener activity is significantly higher during the day, especially:
- in the morning, on the way to work/school
- in the afternoon/evening, during commute and after-work time
For artists with an international audience, a midnight rollout can even make double sense: if your fanbase is spread across, say, Europe and North America, European listeners run into the track hours before the US audience – this creates an early wave of saves and streams that already feeds the algorithm before the day even begins in the US.
If your fanbase, on the other hand, is heavily concentrated in one market – for example primarily DACH – it's worth bundling your promo activities around the local listening peak of that target group instead of strictly staring at midnight.
Our game plan for OneCrew releases
So that this doesn't remain just grey theory, here's how we handle it in practice at OneCrewRecords:
1. Release time: Friday, 00:00 (CET) Triggers the playlist reset on the relevant platforms and maximizes the data window before the next big round of recommendations on Monday.
2. Promo timed separately from the release time Announcements and social media posts don't go out at midnight, but when your fans are actually on their phones:
- Afternoon/evening the day before (build anticipation, push the pre-save)
- Morning on the release day itself (get more reach once the track is already live)
3. Don't forget pitching Many platforms let you submit to editorial playlists before the release – we recommend 3–4 weeks of lead time so that editors and editorial teams have enough time.
4. Check your own data instead of just following rules of thumb In the end, the most reliable source is you: in the artist dashboards of the respective platforms, you can usually see exactly when your followers are most active. This data beats any generic recommendation – including the ones in this article.
Conclusion
Friday, midnight is the solid basic rule – but the real lever lies in the combination of release timing and promo timing. The track goes live at 00:00 so the algorithm gets a clean data window. The promo runs when your fans are really listening. If you separate the two, you get the most out of every release.
